SAFEBREAK VASCULAR VET
SafeBreak Vascular Vet Removes Harmful Forces From IV Lines
SafeBreak Vascular Vet is a breakaway device for peripheral IV lines. The device is installed between the long IV tubing from the pump, and the patient’s IV catheter. When a harmful forces is applied to the IV line, SafeBreak separates to protect the patient and the peripheral IV catheter, as shown in Figure 1, 2, and 3. In animals, SafeBreak has been proven to reduce peripheral IV mechanical complications requiring IV replacement (1, 2).
In both small and large animals, damaging forces placed on the IV line are a common occurrence that lead to IV complications. When these IV complications occur, the IV catheter must be replaced, and the medication infusing frequently spills on the floor and has to be replaced. This leads to wasted time for vet techs/nurses, wasted supplies, increased stress for the patient, and increased cost for the client.

Canine Study
A randomized controlled trial was conducted at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital with 367 canines.
The study demonstrated that there was a statistically significant reduction in IVC complications when SafeBreak was used, with the SafeBreak group showing a 65% reduction in peripheral IV mechanical complications compared to the control group (1).
Large Animal Study
In a prospective trial conducted at The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018, SafeBreak Vascular Vet was placed in the IV line of 29 large animals for the duration of their hospitalization and all IV complications were recorded.
There were 10 SafeBreak separation events in the study, with 24% of the animals experiencing a separation event during enrollment (2). Assuming each IV restart costs the client $70, the use of SafeBreak on the 29 large animals in this study would have resulted in a net savings of $427 to the clients.
